Ageing and end of life
Research, design, and technology for the people navigating ageing, dying, and the systems built around them.

Portable has been working in ageing and end of life since 2018, when we made our first submission to the Royal Commission into Aged Care. We talk with the people living through ageing and dying, and the services built to support them, then design tools that meet them at some of the hardest moments in life.
From a a guide connecting people to end of life services, to a redesigned death notification process, and spiritual care training for personal care assistants across Australia, our work is grounded in real human experience, at one of the most sensitive times in a person's life.

Precious Time gives people facing a terminal diagnosis, or supporting someone who is, a single place to find local end-of-life services, instead of navigating a fragmented health system at one of the hardest moments of their life. For North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network, it turned scattered, hard-to-find service information into one directory their community can actually use when it matters most.
This evaluation gave the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria real evidence, gathered directly from bereaved citizens, funeral directors and service organisations, about what makes the 'death admin' process harder than it needs to be. That evidence shaped improvements to the Victorian pilot and directly informed the design of the emerging National Death Notification Service, so grieving families elsewhere in Australia benefit from lessons learned in Victoria.

Meet Akira helps personal care assistants recognise that spiritual care is already part of their job, not an extra burden, through an interactive story tested with residential carers, community carers and nurses. For Meaningful Ageing Australia, it turned an abstract concept into a tool aged care organisations across the country now use to train staff, on a subscription basis, after a successful 2020 pilot.
