Empowering Legal Aid with Modern Tech

Empowering National Legal Aid and Independent Children’s Lawyers with modern websites and a seamless learning platform, streamlining content management and professional training for a more engaging and efficient online experience.

The National Legal Aid (NLA) and Independent Children’s Lawyers (ICL) knew their outdated websites, inefficient content management processes, and complicated resource systems were holding back their staff from providing the best possible service to vulnerable communities. Not only were the internal systems limiting their day-to-day impact, both institutions were looking towards the future and needed tech that could take them there.

The opportunity

Partnering with Portable, the project goal was to improve the online presence and usability of the NLA and ICL websites by developing user-friendly content management systems (CMS), creating a sophisticated learning management system (LMS) for legal professionals, and implementing a shared design system framework for scalability and future enhancements.

  • Outdated websites with limited usability, impacting user engagement.
  • Complex and inefficient content management processes, requiring a more intuitive system.
  • Lack of seamless integration between training resources and the CMS for ICL.
  • Knowledge gaps among administrative users, creating barriers to effective content management.

Our Approach

The Portable team worked closely with NLA and ICL to design and implement solutions tailored to their needs:

  • Developed user-friendly content management systems (CMS) for both NLA and ICL websites, enabling non-technical users to easily manage and update content.
  • Created a sophisticated learning management system (LMS) for ICL, providing seamless access to accreditation resources and training programs.
  • Built both websites using a shared design system framework to ensure scalability, future enhancements, and a consistent user experience.
  • Delivered training to empower administrative users, addressing internal knowledge gaps and ensuring effective site management.

Outcomes

The NLA and ICL websites carry a great responsibility to provide parents, guardians, and families of all kinds the right support and resources they need as intuitively as possible. We're so grateful to assist in a better future for the families and persons with legal need through modernising tech, achieving:

  • Significantly improved online presence and usability for both the NLA and ICL websites, enhancing user engagement and satisfaction. Website sessions are up 3000% with 28 seconds added to the average time on site.
  • Simplified content management processes, allowing non-technical staff to efficiently manage and update site content.
  • Launched a sophisticated LMS for ICL, providing seamless access to high-quality training resources and accreditation programs for legal professionals.
  • Implemented a shared design system framework, enabling consistent user experience and scalability for future enhancements.
  • Empowered administrators with the tools and training needed to manage learning programs and user access efficiently.

Reflections

The Portable team were approachable, customer-centred, and professional in transforming the National Legal Aid website systems. Our website system was vastly improved through a tailored approach that placed users at the centre of our new websites and Learning Management System. This was connected to a new Content Management System which allows our team to be responsive and iterative with a dynamic online presence.
