  We build the proof of concept ourselves, bring in the specialists and subject matter experts (SMEs) each problem needs, and take it all the way through to something live and marketed. We often back that work with funding we've gone out and secured ourselves.

We've been doing this for 20 years, and we're still finding new problems worth building for and new partners to build them with.

 

 

 

 ##  Research and development 

 We fund our own investigations and learnings into the problems worth solving, keeping us at the forefront of research, experience, and opportunity.

Before [Sweep](https://www.sweep.work/) became a wage compliance platform, it was four years of self-initiated research into how underpayment actually happens, later backed by a $1.1 million Business Research and Innovation Initiative grant from the Australian Government. Before [While you wait ](https://portable.com.au/work/case-studies/while-you-wait-ai-mental-health-helpline-support)could triage calls for people seeking mental health assistance, it was a three-day sprint of research and investigating.

R&D allows for testing, iterating, and bold pushes beyond status quo. It means working with our dream partners, tackling passion projects, and staying at the top of our respective fields.

## amica

Since 2020, [amica](https://portable.com.au/work/case-studies/amica_one) has helped separating couples divide their assets and agree parenting arrangements without going to court. We built it with the Legal Services Commission of South Australia and the Attorney-General's Department, then took it national: more than 200 couples used it in the first week alone. amica has continued in growth and market leadership helping with more than 17,000 separation matters Australia-wide.

 ## Sweep

[Sweep](https://portable.com.au/articles/sweep-wage-compliance-platform-launch-2026) helps retail workers check they're being paid what their award entitles them to, then helps them raise it with their employer if something's off. We built it with legal professionals, tested it with the retail workers who'd use it, and backed it with a $1.1 million grant from the Business Research and Innovation Initiative (BRII) that we secured ourselves. Sweep launched publicly in May 2026, the same year intentional wage underpayment became a criminal offence in Australia. Watch our [animated explainer video](https://youtu.be/fx0aIbJsics).

## Civily

[Civily](https://portable.com.au/articles/civily-digital-family-law-justice-platform) takes everything 10 years of amica taught us and builds it into a platform any court, legal aid body, or government agency can adopt for their own jurisdiction. It's modular, so partners can white label it and shape it around their own legal context, and it carries the same safety features amica pioneered for family violence and coercive control. Civily is how we're scaling what worked in South Australia to family law services across the country.
